The Weekend Setup – September 15, 2022

Last Summer Haircut

This weekend I’ll swing by the barber and get my last summer cut for 2022. I get compliments every time I show up to work with a shorter hairstyle. Maybe it should be my year round hairstyle…? The main reason get it cut short in the summer is because I live in Houston and the heat and humidity are brutal from May through October. It’s just so much more practical and functional having short-er hair. So much quicker and easier to get ready in the morning. No need to go with a full buzz cut, although if you can pull it off, I’m not sure there’s a more confident look for guys. If we are being honest, most guys do a terrible job of styling their hair. So stop fighting it.

Weekend Chore: Fall/Winter Clothing Inventory

Crack open a beer and spend an afternoon going through your closet this weekend. Do you have everything you want for your fall/winter wardrobe? Anything you want to upgrade this autumn? Anything you “need” once cooler weather rolls around? Make sure you have the basics covered. If not, start watching out for any sales for what you need.

  • Chinos and Jeans
  • Oxford shirts
  • Boots
  • Sweaters
  • Comfy joggers and other athleisure
  • A suit that fits you just right for the holiday parties

What to Watch: Tokyo Vice

It’s certainly nice having college football and NFL games back. But there really aren’t too many great matchups this early in the season. Instead, take a look at HBO Max’s original series Tokyo Vice. It’s only 8 episodes long and you’ll be hooked just on the cinematography of Tokyo in the first episode. The show has already been renewed for a second season, and while I wasn’t crazy about how season 1 ended, it’s an incredibly entertaining 8 episodes. If you like The Sopranos and True Detective, you’ll love this show.

What to Read: Buy a Copy of the WSJ

Put your phone down and read it at a coffee shop. Or a bar. But just not at home.

There’s a lot going on in the markets and economy recently. It is still an incredibly volatile time and whether you are invested or not, you should be reading up and learning. In my opinion, the WSJ isn’t what it used to be (thanks Murdoch family), but it still offers one of the best overviews of what’s happening in the markets.

What to Upgrade: Work Bag / Backpack

Want to be taken more seriously at the office? Dress the part. And that includes whatever bag it is you are taking your laptop home from the office every night. I used to just use the generic looking black corporate laptop bag my company gave me. But then about a year ago I upgraded to a nice leather briefcase. Nothing too expensive, but it’s crazy how this simple upgrade gives me just a little confidence boost walking into the office every morning. The old adage “dress for the job you want” might sound a little outdated, but looking the part and making your boss think is about half the job.

If you’re looking for an affordable briefcase or messenger bag, I highly recommend checking out Daniel’s NYC.
