Truefitt & Hill Shaving Cream Review

Today we are going to be reviewing one of my all-time favorite shaving creams for wet shavers: Truefitt & Hill shaving cream.

Truefitt & Hill is one of the coolest and most prestigious shaving companies around. T&H was originally founded as a barbershop back in 1805. They have been operating for over 200 years! They were originally just a barber and perfumer in London, but over the years the have added other men’s grooming products to their product line.

Their original barber store actually still operates as a barbershop in London and is the oldest barbershop in the world according to Guinness. If I ever make it to London, I’m going to swing by the store for a wet shave, haircut and shoe shine.

The name Truefitt & Hill is synonymous with premium men’s grooming products. Their product line includes shaving, fragrance, hair and bath products, and they have continued to improve and evolve their products over time. This isn’t a company stuck in the past.

When I think of T&H, I think of premium products that aren’t overpriced. They are really high quality, but you still get great bang for your buck. But that’s just my opinion, let’s see if it’s the right shaving cream for you.

Key Features of Truefitt & Hill Shaving Cream

Premium Lather AND Premium Lubricant

Most shaving creams do 1 or the other good when it comes to lathering and lubrication. Not many can do both. But Truefitt & Hill shaving cream does.

Let’s start with the lubrication properties of T&H shaving cream. The primary ingredient that makes it such a slick lubricant is glycerin. Glycerin allows it to turn your shaving surface in a really slick surface which goes a long way in helping prevent against against razor burn and nicks and cuts.

When it comes to the lathering, one of my favorites about T&H is the consistency. It’s not too thick where it clogs the blade, but it’s thick enough to offer protection and soften up the beard. Your safety razor blade should easily glide really over Truefitt shaving cream.

I also like that the lather stays a rich, thick lather for some time. It’s really easy to whip it into a rich, thick lather with a shaving brush and some hot water on the brush bristles, and you’ll have enough leftover for a second pass. And here’s some quick advice — it doesn’t take much water on the bristles for it to lather. So squeeze as much water out of your shaving brush bristles as you can before you start loading your brush with Truefitt cream.

Glycerin-Based Ingredients Hydrates Skin

Like I said earlier, Truefitt & Hill is a glycerine-based shaving cream so it does a remarkable job at hydrating your skin during a shave. It really moisturizes and soothes the skin instead of drying it out and stripping away healthy oils. You should absolutely be moisturizing after a shave, but it also helps to use a shaving cream that kicks in some moisturizing benefits as well.

Variety of Scents Available

Truefitt & Hill shaving cream comes in a wide variety of scents. There’s something for everyone. The scents available are: 1805, Almond, Apsley, Grafton, No. 10 Finest, Sandalwood, Trafalgar, Ultimate Comfort, West Indian Lime.

I’ve only ever used the Sandalwood, but I’ve smelled the 1805 and Trafalgar in store and they were great options.

I think Sandalwood and Trafalgar are the most popular. Truefitt shaving cream definitely has a pretty strong scent without being overpowering when applied. Once it’s rinsed off though, it leaves a very mild residual scent.

Another thing I like about Truefitt & Hill is that they do a great job of describing what the scents actually smell like because the name of some of these scents really doesn’t tell you much. But if you read more in the description of the sales page, you should know what you’re getting.

A Little Product Goes A Long Way

When you’re lathering up T&H cream, don’t overdo it on how much you apply to your brush because a little product goes a long way. I always have plenty of lather leftover for a second pass.

I’ve seen some complaints from reviews that T&H shaving cream dries out over time, but I have never had that problem. I would just say make sure you are tightly securing the lid on the jar after using. That should preserve it.

And I rotate through a variety of shaving soaps and creams so it’s tough for me to say how long it lasts but if I had to guess, I think one container of Truefitt & Hill would last me for at least 6 months. Doesn’t seem so expensive when you take into consideration how many shaves you can get out of 1 container, does it?

By the way, also keep in mind that T&H comes with 6.7 ounces of product whereas most other similar shaving creams only come with 5.3 ounces. So make sure you are comparing prices on a $/ounce basis if you’re really concerned with finding the most budget friendly option.

History of Excellence

Companies don’t survive 200+ years if they don’t know what they’re doing.

Truefitt & Hill products are about as tried and tested as you’re going to find. Yes, they have tweaked and changed their products over the years, but they are consistently considered one of the best.

I would never buy a product just on brand name and history alone. I want the best products for me today. But it really is kind of cool to use a shaving cream from a company with such a rich history. Wet shaving is a pretty nostalgic thing and none has more nostalgia than Truefitt & Hill.

Who Do We Recommend T&H For?

Truefitt & Hill shaving cream is one of the best shaving creams on the market. I highly recommend it to any beginner wet shaver looking for their first classic, non-aerosol shaving cream.

There really are no big drawbacks to it. It’s an excellent lather and lubricant and the 6.7 ounces of product will last a long, long time. Just make sure you buy the right scent and I don’t think you will be disappointed.

What Are Some Other Shaving Creams To Consider?

Taylor of Old Bond Street

Taylor of Old Bond Street is probably the most popular traditional shaving cream on the market. And it is very similar to Truefitt & Hill’s shaving cream.

TOBS comes in a slightly smaller container (5.3 ounces) but it should still last you for several months. There is a variety of scents available as well.

I really don’t think you can go wrong with either option between T&H or TOBS. If you want a slick shaving cream that lathers up really great, Taylor of Old Bond Street is another great option.

Proraso Shaving Cream

Proraso shaving cream is another excellent option. It comes in a tube instead of a jar, but other than that, it performs comparably with T&H shaving cream.

Proraso is a very slick lubricant, but I think a slightly thicker lather than most others. Because if this, I wouldn’t recommend it if you use a cartridge or disposable razor. It is great though for for double-edge razor or straight razor users.

Lather & Wood Shaving Soap

Most beginner wet shavers focus on finding a shaving cream, but I highly recommend they consider getting a shaving soap as well. Shaving soaps require a little more prep work, but lots of wet shavers prefer them over creams because they tend to be a slightly better lubricant which helps reduce razor burn.

Lather & Wood shaving soap is one of my favorites. It is incredibly slick and lathers up really well. It’s going to take some patience to figure out how to get the right consistency in the lather, but watch a few YouTube videos and you should get the hang of it quickly.

I personally use the “sandalwood” scent which gives off a very classic, masculine smell. The scent fades away once you rinse it off though and then you can apply a nice smelling aftershave or cologne.
