WEISHI Long Handle Safety Razor Review

Life is all about managing expectations. When you don't let your expectations run rampant about something, and your expectations actually end up meeting reality, you're going to be a happy camper. That's why the WEISHI long handled safety razor is all about managing expectations.

Don't get us wrong, it's an excellent safety razor. But you shouldn't be expecting the same quality, durability or performance from it that you would expect from a more premium safety razor like a Parker or Merkur.

Everything You Need to Know About the WEISHI Long Handle Butterfly Safety Razor

The WEISHI long handle is one of the mildest shaves around, but it’s not just men looking for a mild shave that should consider it. We really think there’s 3 groups of men that should consider buying a WEISHI long handle.

  1. If you only need a mild shave because you have thin or fine facial hair.
  2. If you need a budget safety razor, whether as a backup or to use as your main travel safety razor.
  3. You’re still not too sure about investing in a safety razor and want to give an affordable, entry-level product a trial run first.

Alright, so let’s get into the specifics of what makes the WEISHI a really good mild safety razor and not just a cheap safety razor.

Product Specifications

  • Double-edge, closed comb safety razor
  • Butterfly open
  • Weighs around 2.5 ounces
  • 4.33 inches long
  • Includes carry case with mirror and brush
  • Brass comes in dark gray or silver

Expected Aggressiveness

This is probably one of the mildest safety razors you can buy. If you are expecting anything remotely more than a very mild shave, you should be looking for a different safety razor.

On a scale of 1 to 10 on aggressiveness, the WEISHI is probably a 2, maybe a 3. And as long as that is your expectation going in when using it, you won’t be disappointed. If you have very fine or thin facial hair, this is an excellent option. If you have thick or coarse facial hair though and really need a very aggressive shave, this razor probably isn’t going to work for you.

By the way -- don’t confuse an extremely mild shave with saying this provides a bad shave. It doesn’t! It actually provides a really good shave in fact. I will get more into the performance a little later though, but just remember mild shave does not necessarily mean bad shave.

Size and Weight Distribution

Unfortunately, there’s not a lot of weight to the WEISHI long handled butterfly, but that should be expected when you take into consideration it's cost. After all, if they used heavier products while manufacturing, it wouldn't be so cheap. Can't have it both ways.

The WEISHI only weighs 2.5 ounces, and it definitely feels that light. Lightness usually is a problem for many beginner wet shavers because instead of letting the weight of the razor do the work, it makes them want to use some force like they do with a cartridge razor. It really takes a concentrated effort to make sure you are not pressing down when using the razor.

The bad news is that it's light and forces some users to shave with poor technique, but the good news is that it has excellent weight distribution. The center of mass is right where you want it to be below the razor head. This really helps with the grip so you're not having to overcompensate to keep it balanced in your hand while shaving.

The long handle is another feature that we really like. It is roughly 4.3 inches long and gives you the ability to grip it several different ways and have better command while finessing your face. And while it is long, it's not bulky. It's still a streamlined design and lets you maneuver it easily around the tough to reach areas on your face.

We definitely wish it had a little more weight so it would be easier to use proper wet shaving technique, but the good weight distribution helps compensate for this.

Grip

WEISHI absolutely crushed it when it comes to grip. The vertical and horizontal grooves give it a great amount of grip, but it still feels very comfortable in our hands. It’s not sharp or pointy. Combine the grooves with the fact that it is over 4 inches long and nobody should have difficulty keeping a grip. Other razor companies could really learn a lesson from WEISHI. They made a stylish (affordable) safety razor without sacrificing on grip.

Durability and Maintenance

The WEISHI long handle is not difficult to maintain, but that doesn’t mean it is incredibly durable. First of all, you need to keep in perspective that this is one of the cheapest safety razors available on the market. It’s going to last a long time if you take care of it, but it can’t quite take the daily beating that others can.

That doesn’t mean it’s not a quality razor and durable though. Because it is good quality and durable! If you judge the quality of the WEISHI to others in the same price range, we think the WEISHI is better quality. We have no idea how they can manufacture it out of the brass or copper alloy that it is made from, but it is really impressive.

Shave Quality

For a very mild aggressiveness, the shave quality is actually pretty good. Like we said earlier, don't expect as smooth of a shave as you could get with an entry-level Parker or Merkur, but this is still a step up from any cartridge razor we have previously used.

Like with most safety razors though, shave quality is largely tied to how good of blades you are using too. If you’re using cheap, dull blades, your shave isn't going to be that great. But if you're using a good quality and sharp blade, you should expect a really good shave.

Use proper technique and buy some decent blades, and we think you will be pleasantly surprised st how well of a mild shave the WEISHI long handle can deliver.

Overall Performance

The WEISHI long handle really is a quality razor and delivers great performance for what it is designed for. No, it won't last as longer as more expensive razors, but it is a great option for a lot of men.

If you have been researching safety razors because you’re tired of using a cartridge razor but are still on the fence, this is an excellent option to use for a trial run. Because it is a very mild shave, it really does a great job of helping beginners transition into wet shaving and evaluate if another more durable safety razor is worth pursuing.

This is also a great option for men that are looking for a good safety razor to travel with or men that have very fine facial hair. If you have thin or sparse facial hair, you might only need a very mild shave.

Overall, this is a great safety razor to learn with, travel with or for men looking for a mild shave.

What Are Some Other Safety Razors to Consider?

Feather Double Edge Safety Razor

Another great option for men that want a safety razor on a tight budget is the Feather "Popular" Double Edge Safety Razor. This is also a butterfly open double-edge, but part of it is made from plastic which we are not crazy about. However, it does provide a slightly more aggressive shave. On a scale of 1 - 10, it is probably a 3, compared to the WEISHI being between a 2 and 3. It’s not a huge difference though. Overall, another great option for a budget-friendly safety razor that delivers a mild shave.

Wilkinson Sword Classic

Another low-cost option is the Wilkinson Sword Classic safety razor, but this one is made primarily with plastic and a metal rod reinforcing the handle inside. It’s good quality and well made, but we have found that plastic just doesn’t stand the test of time as good. The Wilkinson Sword Classic provides a very mild shave.

Lord L6

One of the few 3-piece budget safety razors is the Lord L6. Also has a long handle at 4.3 inches, but it’s pretty light at less than 2 ounces in weight. We might sound like a broken record, but the Lord L6 also delivers a very mild shave.

Final Thought's On The Weishi Long Handle Safety Razor

The WEISHI long handle butterfly open double-edge safety razor is a really good option for a lot of men. If you're new to safety razors and want to try one out for a while without having to invest a decent amount of money, this is a great option. If you need a cheaper travel safety razor, this is a great option. If you just need a very mild shave, this is a great option.

We will say it again, but the WEISHI long handle is a great razor if you are managing your expectations going in. And we don’t mean expect a poor shave. Far from it. It delivers very good performance and is quite durable. Just know you're going to be getting a very mild shave when you but it, and you won't be disappointed.

Want to know our favorite part though? Even at its “budget” safety razor cost, it still crushes the performance of any cartridge razor out there.
