Shark Super Chrome Double Edge Razor Blades Review

Today we are going to be taking a detailed look at the popular Shark Super Chrome double edge razor blades.

Shark Super Chrome blades are made by the reputable wet shaving company Lord Company. Some of you are probably at least somewhat familiar with some of Lord’s other products as they also make a shaving cream, a shaving soap and the popular budget safety razor the Lord L6.

The Shark Super Chrome’s are known for delivering a very mild and smooth shave. So if you’re looking for an aggressive blade, these probably aren’t the ones for you.

But if you prefer a mild blade that is very smooth and easy on your face and neck, these are a great option. Let’s take an in-depth look at them and see.

Pros

  • Incredibly smooth blade
  • Great option for men that want a more mild shave
  • Dispenser is also a blade bank
  • Excellent blade for guys that shave every day

Cons

  • Not sharp enough for some men with thick, coarse facial hair

Product Overview

The Shark Super Chrome blades are manufactured in an ISO2000 facility in Egypt, according to their marketing materials. I have no idea what that means but if any of you do, please let us know in the comments below why that would be important.

Anyway, these blades are made out of stainless steel but they are chrome plated, hence the name “Super Chrome”. They are also coated with a polymer coating which helps the blade give a smooth shave. In the marketing, they explicitly say not to wipe down the blades after using them as it may wipe off some of this coating. Instead, they say to just shake the razor dry after using.

Shark Super Chrome’s are sold in a variety of quantities but they are packaged in groups of 5 blades to a pack. So if your order a pack of 100, you’ll actually be getting 20 packs of 5.

The packs of 5 are packaged in a small rectangular plastic dispenser with each blade inside the container individually wrapped in a piece of paper to make them safe to handle and protect them from deterioration before use. The wrappers are yellow with the word “Shark” in a pattern across them so there’s no confusion on which brand of blades you are using. The blades look like your standard double edge razor blades but they have the words “Shark” and “Super Chrome” stamped on them.

One nice feature about the plastic dispenser the blades come in is that at the bottom of the dispenser is a slot where you can insert your used blades. So there’s no need to keep an extra blade bank on hand as this container is a blade bank on its own. And then when you’re done with the 5 blades and have deposited them in the slot, just toss the white plastic container in the trash.

I’ve seen some marketing materials claim that these blades are great in Parker, Merkur and Gillette safety razors, but they should fit in any standard safety razor.

Key Features & Characteristics

Perfect for the Wet Shaver that Wants to Prioritize Smoothness From a Blade

The Shark Super Chrome razor blades have a reputation as being one of the smoothest blades on the market. And I definitely agree with that.

However, I was a little surprised that these actually were a little sharper than I was expecting. I’d probably rate these as a 6/10, maybe even 7/10, on the sharpness scale.

That said, I definitely think these are best geared for men that want to prioritize smoothness over sharpness.

Personally, I prefer a little more sharpness from a blade because my hair is slightly coarse and I typically only shave every 3 or 4 days. Therefore, by the time I shave, I’ve got a decently thick beard that needs a sharper razor to cut through all that hair.

But I certainly see the appeal of these for anyone that is willing to sacrifice some sharpness in a blade to get a blade about as smooth as you can get.

Great for Guys Looking to Shave Every 1 or 2 Days

I think that the Shark Super Chrome blades are a really good option for men that shave everyday or every other day. Especially men that shave every morning before work and don’t have a lot of time on their hands. Why?

Because they are so smooth that it’s very rare you’re going to get bad irritation from one of these. As long as you’re using good form and cleaning your safety razor after every shave, most men should not have to worry about getting nicks or cuts or any other irritation from these blades.

This blade doesn’t work for me because I only shave every 3 or 4 days and my hair gets too long for it to be able to shave off easily. But if you’re shaving every morning or every other morning, your facial hair shouldn’t be long enough to where you need a really sharp blade to take it off.

Now it may take 2 or 3 passes to get it as smooth as you’d like, but the Shark blades are plenty sharp enough to be able to take off a 1 or 2 day stubble without a problem. And since they are so smooth, you shouldn’t be cutting yourself or getting irritation very often.

How Long Do These Blades Last?

My experience with Shark Super Chrome blades is that they were pretty durable and worked great for 3 or 4 shaves, but usually by the 5th shave they just were not sharp enough for me to get as good of a shave as I like. As a reminder, I have semi-coarse hair but my beard grows at a medium thickness. I knew that Shark’s work best on minimal stubble so I was shaving every day at the time I used them.

I do think it’s possible for some men to get 5+ high quality shaves out of a Shark Super Chrome, but I’d imagine only men with really fine hair and little facial hair could do so. Why? Because the Shark blades already start off so smooth and mild that by the time you get to the 5th shave, they’ve lost a decent amount of the sharpness they even had to start with.

For me, the Shark Super Chrome’s never lost their smoothness, they just weren’t sharp enough by shave #5. Men with less facial hair and soft or fine hair follicles might be able to get a few more shaves out of them, but I wouldn’t stretch these for too long. And honestly, these blades are so affordable, what’s the point of trying to stretch these to 7 or 8 shaves?

After all, let’s say you buy a pack of 100 and get an average of 4 shaves out of each blade. That means 1 pack of 100 will last you over an entire year! Is it really worth it to try to stretch blades out for a few more sub-optimal shaves? I don’t think so.

What Are Some Other Good DE Blades to Consider?

Derby Extra

Derby Extra’s are another excellent smooth blade that provide a very mild shave. I think these are slightly less sharp than the Shark blades, but it’s not too noticeable. Overall, these perform very similarly to the Super Chrome and are a great option if you want a smooth blade.

Merkur

Merkur double-edge blades are a step up in sharpness in comparison to the Super Chrome blades, but they also provide a very smooth and forgiving shave. These are incredibly well made blades and are definitely a premium product. If you want a slightly sharper blade that is still very smooth, these are a great option.

Wilkinson Sword

Wilkinson Sword razor blades are noticeably sharper than the Shark blades. However, they do still offer an above average smoothness. Are they as smooth as the Super Chrome’s? No. But they do have a nice mix of sharpness and smoothness. If you need a blade with a little more sharpness that will still be pretty smooth on your face, this is a great option.
